More about the museum

Foundation from 1914
The association The Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology was founded in 1914, in connection with the large anniversary exhibition at Frogner in Oslo. Several of the museum's objects originate from this exhibition. Read about our collections and objects here. In 1995 The Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology received status as a national museum. In connection with the 100th anniversary in 2014, the book was Technology at the museum published. The book shows how the view of the technique, and of the museum, has changed over 100 years.

Contemporary and historical exhibitions
Since its inception The Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology has had the task of being both a contemporary museum and a historical museum for industry, science and technology. Today, the museum also has national responsibility for the National Medical Museum.

Bridges between different professional traditions
The museum will convey the connection between technology, medicine and culture over time, in addition to providing insight into the basic principles of modern technological processes and products that surround us today. Our science center illustrates the basic principles of physical laws through the provision of playful learning via interactive installations. The museum's biggest challenge is to be a bridge-builder between fragmented expert knowledge on the one hand and the public in a broad sense on the other.

20,700 m2
The Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology has previously had exhibition spaces in the Viking Ship Museum on Bygdøy, and in Fyrstikkalléen on Etterstad. Today's museum building was officially opened at Kjelsås in May 1986. The museum has 20,700 square meters here. It includes showrooms and offices, warehouses and magazines, workshops and a library.
