When will the cod return to

The Oslofjord?

Can we save the cod in the Oslofjord?

Scientists, politicians and the general public are very concerned about the condition of the Oslofjord and the entire Skagerrak. Major research programs are underway to find answers to what many are wondering - both the basic questions about the causes of the crisis and what needs to be done, and the more prosaic but equally important ones: Can we save the cod in the Oslo Fjord?

Sissel Jentoft is a researcher at CEES (Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis) at the Department of Biosciences, University of Oslo. There, for the past 15 years, she has used the new technology whole genome sequencing to map the entire genetic material of a number of the important cod stocks in Norway. She is also part of the research community "The Nansen Legacy" which continues Fridtjof Nansen's pioneering combination of life sciences and marine research.

Sissel Jentoft will give an insight into the status of the cod that lives in the Oslo Fjord - and the nearby sea areas - and why genetics can give us new knowledge that can be important in saving the cod from complete collapse.

The event is in collaboration with The Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology 's Friends Association, Teknas's Technology History Group and NITO.
