Lending of objects

The Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology is responsible for the preservation of the material cultural heritage in the areas of industry, technology, natural sciences and medicine.

The Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology is a member of ICOM (International Council of Museums) and undertakes through its membership to follow ICOM's ethical regulations. This imposes a social responsibility on the museum as manager of the collections. The stewardship duties impose responsibility on the museum for the long-term protection of the collections. It is our task to preserve the objects in such a way that they can also benefit future generations. This places strict demands on us in terms of conditions for lending.

As a result of this The Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology under normal circumstances only lends objects to museums or other cultural institutions that can document satisfactory exhibition conditions both in terms of safety and climate. Objects are not lent to private individuals or to commercial enterprises.

An application for a loan must be in writing before the museum processes it. The application must be submitted to the museum well in advance of the relevant loan period, no later than 3 months before the desired loan date.

For any loan, the borrower will have to document the exhibition conditions by filling in a facility report that will be sent from the museum after the application has been received. Furthermore, the lending institution must satisfy the requirements set by The Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology in the loan contract to be entered into before the loan takes place. The contract regulates, among other things, the loan period, purpose of the loan and conditions relating to insurance and liability for damages.

Costs for transport and couriers from the museum to the lending institution, as well as any costs for conserving the object, are covered by the borrower. The Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology is responsible for implementing these measures. The same conditions apply when returning the item.

The Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology does not lend or rent out the museum's objects for film and TV recordings, advertising or private use. Our task is to preserve these objects for posterity and ensure that they are available for future generations. We therefore set strict requirements for the objects' treatment and storage climate.
