The National Museum describes Munthe as follows:

"Gerhard Munthe (1849–1929) was a very productive artist who covered most fields within the art industry. In particular, he made a great effort in room decoration, including in Håkonshallen in Bergen, Strand gård in Numedal and the Adventure Room at Holmenkollen Turisthotell. Munthe not only made wall decorations, but also designed furniture, doors and other fittings. These works are among the country's first gesamtkunstwerk. Munthe is seen as our first industrial designer and caused a stir both at home and abroad."

The exhibition shows the versatility of Munthe's artistic work. Here are some samples from the exhibition and activities you can take part in:

Håkonshallen in 3D

Munthe made a great effort to decorate the rooms of Håkonshallen in Bergen. Now the medieval stone hall is given new life in the animation associated with the exhibition. For the first time, you will see an animation that shows you the interior as it originally stood in 1916-1944.

Home at Leveld

Munthe lived at Leveld in Lysaker. The house was designed by Munthe himself, and was designed in the so-called Norwegian stately homestead style. Many artists let their artistic ideas unfold in domestic interiors. Munthe was no exception here.

Despite the fact that the house burned down in 1982, it has been immortalized in a number of watercolors in the exhibition.

Furniture and textiles

Munthe also designed furniture and textiles to his own design. He wanted to create something unique, inspired by old farmhouses.

The exhibition offers a number of patterns that Munthe designed in his time.

Activities and teaching

The National Museum has created a physical activity booklet with tasks. Here you have a unique opportunity to combine art history, teaching and experience.

There is also an online guide for teachers who wish to use the exhibition in teaching. The guidance document is adapted to mediators who want to focus on various subjects such as arts and crafts, mathematics or Norwegian teaching.

The exhibition is curated by senior researcher at the National Museum, Widar Halén, in collaboration with guest curator and art historian Jan Kokkin.

The dissemination program is curated by the curator of dissemination; Helga Gravermoen. The exhibition design was carried out by Torsteinsens Design.
