Export of cultural relics

The "Act on Cultural Heritage" will ensure that future generations will also benefit from and enjoy the cultural heritage. The law's ban on the export of cultural relics is intended to protect and care for fixed and loose cultural relics which are an important part of Norway's cultural heritage and history. In addition, it must ensure documentation and knowledge about the cultural relics that are permitted to be taken out of the country.

The Ministry of Culture and the Church has designated twelve institutions to process applications and make decisions on the export of art and cultural objects. The Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology is the statutory institution for means of transport and other technical cultural objects.

Among the art and cultural objects for which you must apply for an export permit at The Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology are:

  • Objects, regardless of age, which are of particular importance to the history of science and technology.
  • Motor vehicles, aircraft and rail-running equipment or parts thereof from before 1950.
  • For the export of military vehicles, the application must be sent to the Norwegian Defense Museum.

Applications must be written on a prescribed form. The application and photographs of the object must be sent in good time to The Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology .

The museum prepares an export permit that must accompany the object when crossing the border.
