Oslo Science Centre and The Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology have two creative workshops; Teknoteket, established in 2015, and Teknolab, established in 2018. The creative workshops aim to inspire children and young people to use technology in creative ways to express themselves and create things themselves.
In our creative workshops, science, arts and crafts and programming are combined in an interdisciplinary way and the offer is used by school classes, for continuing education of teachers and is an arena for youth at Oslo Science Centre 's Talent Centre.
The crafting workshops are equipped with everything from glue guns, scissors, carpentry tools to electronics, 3D printers and laser cutters. We combine traditional woodworking technology with modern technology from digital fabrication. We also work specifically on combining programming with microcontrollers and digital fabrication to take programming off the screen.
The TeknoLab creation workshop is also equipped with the world's first programmable micro:bit orchestra, produced by the museum's first "Maker in residence" Daniel Lacey-McDermott.
The workshops are also used in collaboration with Skaperskolen.no, project super:bit, for electronics repair parties in collaboration with Restarters Oslo, for continuing education with the Science Center, UiO and OsloMet and as arenas for team building. There is also close collaboration with the other 10 regional science centers in Norway that have also established workshops.
"It's basically about today's young people understanding technology, but also being part of creating technology, not just consuming technology. I think what we're seeing here will better equip students to be part of solving many of the puzzles of the future, many of the puzzles we haven't been able to solve so far."
