Experiment:
CREATE YOUR OWN VOLCANO!
Building a volcano in your kitchen is a fun science project that has the added "wow" factor of an explosion. It's great for a rainy day, a summer day, or any day.
You need:
- Vinegar
- Baking soda
- Food coloring
- Wash
- Soda bottle (dry and clean)
- Funnel
This is what you do:
Put three tablespoons of baking powder in the bottle.
Put it in the sink. Measure out 1 dl.
vinegar in a glass, add a teaspoon of washing-up liquid and a few drops of food colouring. Stir. Place the funnel in the bottle and pour in the mixture.
Observe:
Use your senses to observe the experiment.
- What do you see?
- What's up?
- Can you hear anything?
- How long do the reactions last?
Record your observations.
Explore further:
- Change the amount of vinegar. What's up?
- Change the amount of water. Did it change the reactions? How?
- Change the amount of baking soda. What's up?
- Repeat the experiment without adding soap. What is different?
What is going on?
When you mix vinegar and baking powder, you get a chemical reaction. The vinegar reacts with the baking powder and produces a gas called carbon dioxide. The washing-up liquid causes bubbles of carbon dioxide to form. After a short time the bottle will be full of foam, and the "volcano" will erupt!
