Lecture

The modern beer

Hear the story of the establishment of modern beer in Christiania in the period 1840-1890. The Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology's first curator, Ingebjørg Eidhammer, tells, based on her doctoral thesis, how we went from a traditional top-fermented beer to a stable and durable bottom-fermented beer that could be shipped all over the world and still taste the same.

The Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology manages the archives of Ringnes Brewery, which today contains the archives of all the breweries in Christiania from this period. Read the summary of the thesis "There is a lot of thought behind a glass of beer" The role of knowledge in the establishment of modern beer in Christiania in the period 1840-1890 by Ingebjørg Eidhammer.
