The Apollo 11 Saturn V lifted off with astronauts Neil A. Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin E Aldrin Jr. at 9:32 a.m., July 20, 1969, from Kennedy Space Center.
On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon. The Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology marks the 50th anniversary with the exhibition Moon Landing 50 Years. Space expert Erik Tandberg opens the large anniversary exhibition and Benny Borg provides the entertainment, just as he did during Moon Night 50 years ago.
Take a seat in Apollo 11, land The Eagle on the Moon, see a real moon rock and revel in iconic images from the moon landing. Also see films, models and learn more about the story of the space race.
The biggest exhibition of the year
The Moon landing is one of the great moments in the history of technology and science. The Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology marks the event with the anniversary exhibition Moon Landing 50 Years. It is the museum's largest exhibition initiative this year. The exhibition offers a wide range of family activities in addition to telling the story of the space race and the conquest of the Moon. Moon Landing 50 Years also contains objects from NRK's historical collection, which the museum took over in 2018.
Space expert Erik Tandberg opens the exhibition
During the opening, legendary space expert Erik Tandberg will tell us why we humans so want to go to the Moon.
- We relive the night when “everyone” in Norway followed what happened via TV and radio, guided by space expert Erik Tandberg. He will talk about the actual moon landing and share his experiences from when he sat in the NRK studio on the moonlit night and guided Norway through the events, says the curator of the exhibition, Dag Andreassen.
Benny Borg repeats the entertainment success from the moonlit night
Benny Borg was in charge of TV entertainment 50 years ago, together with Kirsti Sparboe. He had his breakthrough during the NRK broadcast Moon Night. So it wasn't just Apollo 11 that took off 50 years ago.
– The day after the moonlit night, everyone in Norway knew who I was, says Benny Borg.
After a six-decade career in showbiz, he will come to The Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology on April 11.
– During the opening of the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing, Benny Borg will give us some of the countless songs about the Moon, Andreassen continues enthusiastically.
World premiere of The Big Bang
The sound artwork The Big Bang was specially commissioned for the exhibition, and before we hear the sound of the new installation we are introduced to the thoughts behind the work.
For Dag Andreassen, a boyhood dream comes true when he himself can take a seat in Apollo 11 and pilot The Eagle down to the Moon. He hopes all visitors to the museum will take the opportunity to do the same.
– We hope as many people as possible will experience the exhibition while it is on display at The Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology . What could be better than taking the children to travel to the moon, he asks.
The moonstone is on loan from the NTNU Science Museum.
