The Maternity Home Exhibition

LIFE AND DEATH

The exhibition that put mother and child on the agenda

The Maternity Home Exhibition opened in Kristiania in 1916. It argued that motherhood, women's health and infant care were public affairs, not something that only belonged in the private sphere.

According to the initiators, women should be paid for the important work of giving birth and raising children. The exhibition influenced the political agenda and was shown all over the country. It contributed to the building of more birthing rooms and maternity homes, so-called maternity homes.
