Dis-ability
LIFE AND DEATH
Can a body with a disability be seen as a machine in need of modification?
New and increasingly amazing technological innovations can make us think like this. Advanced prostheses, wheelchairs and speech machines give disabled people more freedom and independence.
But not everyone likes to think of themselves as a broken machine. Prejudice and stigmatization can prevent us from seeing that what we call disability are really just different ways of being human.
Both the individual and society may need help – both the wheelchair and the wheelchair ramp are necessary.
